The hardest part of any business venture is complete once the DEFINITE DECISION is made to start a business for a specific reason. In his acclaimed book, Think and Grow Rich, revolutionary author Napoleon Hill introduced essential success principles learned from the study of and interaction with over 500 of the world’s most successful people.
In the book, Hill illustrates the significance of making a DEFINITE DECISION based on DESIRE in the story of the founding of the United States. Whether you are a U.S. citizen or not, it is important to understand that U.S. citizens are able to enjoy the freedoms and liberties granted to us today because two men were able to make a DEFINITE DECISION over 200 years ago!
As you read about America’s greatest DESICION, focus on understanding the value of making a DEFINITE DECISION to accomplish whatever it is you may DESIRE of a home business.
At the time this story begins, British soldiers had settled in Boston and roamed the streets daily. After an incident in which British soldiers attacked a group of Bostonian colonists in March of 1770, it was two Colonists, John Hancock and Samuel Adams, who made a DEFINITE DECISION to speak up and make a declaration to remove all British soldiers from Boston. By making this declaration, these men changed the course of history.

An assembly of prominent colonists led by Hancock and Adams was formed, resulting in the dismissal of British troops from Boston. Throughout the next couple of years, Adams envisioned and formed a correspondence committee that would allow the thirteen discontented Colonies to communicate more effectively in their unified efforts against the British.
Just as the Colonists were planning against the British in the early stages of the revolution, the British were planning to slow the opposition. In using fear to threaten Adams, the British Governor of Massachusetts sent a messenger to confront him. The messenger bribed Adams and ensured him that if he would discontinue his opposition of the British, he would no longer be punishable for treason and would receive personal advantages in siding with the King.
Adams’ response changed history. Rather than giving in to the pressures of the British, Adams responded with the following comment, “Then you may tell Governor Gage that I trust I have long since made my peace with the King of Kings. No personal consideration shall induce me to abandon the righteous cause of my Country. And, tell Governor Gage it is the advice of Samuel Adams to him, no longer to insult the feelings of an exasperated people.”
This is the conviction we need as entrepreneurs! Do not back down to resistance.
Upon receipt of this message, Governor Gage was furious. He ordered pardons to those who accepted the British position and a death warrant on Hancock and Adams. In a hurry, Hancock and Adams called a secret meeting that organized a congress of the Colonists. As an end result of this meeting, through the correspondence committee of the Colonies, the meeting of the First Continental Congress was held in Philadelphia on September 5, 1774.
At the same time, another leading colonist, Thomas Jefferson, was publishing a review of the colonist’s rights, which led him to be subject to treason of the British crown.
On June 7, 1776, Richard Henry Lee made the following motion to the assembly, “Gentlemen, I make the motion that these united Colonies are and of right ought to be free and independent states. That they be absolved from all allegiance of the British crown and that all political connection between them and the state of Great Britain is and ought to be totally dissolved.”
From Lee’s motion, debate followed for days. After becoming irritated with the constant debate, Lee made the following statement, “Mr. President, we have discussed this issue for days. It is the only course for us to follow. Why then, sir, do we longer delay? Why still deliberate? Let this happy day give birth to an American Republic. Let her arise, not to devastate and to conquer, but to reestablish the reign of peace and of law.”
Jefferson quickly sided with Lee and represented his cause while Lee left for a family emergency. Jefferson was appointed as the chairmen of a committee to draft a Declaration of Independence.
On July 4, 1776, Jefferson read the declaration to the assembly, “When in the course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the Earth the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.”
The declaration was signed by the fifty-six men of the assembly, each of them staking their lives on their signature. From this DECISION, a nation was born that allows us the ability to make similar DECISIONS today.
